The Challenge:
Maintaining Clean, Disinfectant-Safe Surfaces Across Critical Care Areas
Sutter Health Medical Center in Sacramento, California has long recognized that infection control requires the right disinfectant-ready tools. Across its hospitals, operating rooms, and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), the organization faced a growing need to ensure that all high-touch surfaces and devices could withstand repeated exposure to hospital-grade chemical disinfectants without degrading or damaging equipment. Protecting patients—especially vulnerable newborns—was central to this effort.
At the same time, Sutter Health sought to strengthen its patient data privacy safeguards with solutions capable of meeting HIPAA compliance. The challenge was clear: find durable, disinfectant-resistant technology that could help maintain a cleaner, safer environment across diverse clinical settings.
The Solution:
UV Sanitizers and Technologies Compatible with Hospital Cleaning Products
To meet these goals, Sutter Health partnered with Seal Shield to standardize disinfectant-compatible infection control solutions across its network. For more than a decade, the health system has relied on washable keyboards and mice to support daily infection control across its operating rooms and critical care settings. These fully sealed, waterproof peripherals allow for routine cleaning with strong medical-grade disinfectants while maintaining long-term performance. They are built to handle a variety of cleaning products, EPA-certified wipes and bleach solutions like Clorox Disinfecting Bleach.
Building on that foundation, Sutter Health expanded its infection control strategy by protecting more than 3,000 laptops with medical-grade screen protectors. These screen protectors help safeguard sensitive information from any prying eyes without darkening the screen for the user. Compatible with EPA-registered disinfecting products, the privacy screens enable frequent cleaning without compromising visibility or device performance.
At the downtown Sacramento facility, staff adopted CleanSlate UV sanitization systems since 2019 for mobile devices entering and across patient-care zones—from emergency rooms to labs and ICUs. The fleet of rapid, touch-free sanitizers has since grown to almost 20 allowing staff and visitors to sanitize mobile devices in 20 seconds. Meanwhile, the San Francisco campus introduced the ElectroClave UV Sanitization System in its NICU, which was designed with staff in mind to sanitize a fleet of shared devices without disrupting workflows. It can be a reliable way to sanitize personal and organization-owned electronic devices before entering sensitive infant areas.
CleanSlate UV Inactivates Pathogens on Mobile Devices in Just 20 Seconds
The Impact:
Cleaner Surfaces, Reliable Devices, and Disinfectant-Driven Confidence
Today, Sutter Health stands as a strong advocate for waterproof peripherals and efficient UV-C sanitization. In San Francisco, hundreds of devices and high-touch items undergo UV sanitization through the ElectroClave system in the NICU, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to the smallest and most vulnerable patients. Since deploying CleanSlate UV in 2019, Sutter Health has sanitized nearly 350,000 devices across its hospitals, inactivating more than 4 billion pathogens per square inch of surface area. The organization has also saved over 10,500 labor hours by streamlining manual cleaning processes. In addition, it has prevented more than 13,000 pounds of disinfectant wipes from entering landfills—showcasing its commitment to both infection prevention and sustainability.
By standardizing medical-grade privacy screen protectors, Sutter Health has also strengthened its digital compliance posture, ensuring clean, secure devices that align with HIPAA requirements. Since implementation, there have been 0 reported cases of screen damage from chemicals. The combined use of washable peripherals, UV sanitizers, and privacy screen protection demonstrates a comprehensive infection-control approach that safeguards both people and technology.
