In 2006, Seal Shield set out to solve a problem most companies had not at the time: how do you keep shared technology clean, functional, and safe in environments where hygiene is mission critical? That question has proven to be the foundation for providing innovative healthcare solutions.
As Seal Shield marks its 20th anniversary, it’s worth reflecting on how far the company (and industry) has come, and why Seal Shield’s infection control focus matters now more than ever.
Making an Impact on the Health Care Experience
Seal Shield made itself known with the world’s first dishwasher-safe keyboard and mouse. At the time, the concept was almost unheard of. Traditional keyboards were not designed with infection prevention in mind (BMJ).
Seal Shield challenged that status quo by engineering a keyboard compatible with hospital-grade disinfectants without compromising performance. It wasn’t about adding temporary fixes. It built durability directly into the device to improve product longevity.
Seal Shield’s washable keyboards and mice marked a turning point for the broader conversation around shared technology. Suddenly, medical practitioners could align around healthcare solutions that supported cleaning protocols instead of working against them.

Expanding Healthcare Solutions Beyond the Keyboard
As healthcare services evolved, so did the demands placed on technology. Technology spread beyond clinical areas into waiting rooms, dialysis centers, NICUs, and long-term care facilities. Phones, tablets, and handheld electronics were everywhere used by clinicians, patients, and families but rarely included in formal disinfection routines – leading to a rise in cross-contamination through high-touch devices.
Seal Shield responded by expanding its portfolio to support these realities with purpose-built healthcare solutions. One of the most significant milestones in that evolution was the introduction of the UV-C sanitization system: ElectroClave™. Rather than relying on manual cleaning methods like wipes or sprays, the ElectroClave brought automated 360-degree UV-C sanitization into healthcare environments. This system was designed for staff to inactivate pathogens on their mobile fleets and high-touch clinical devices. Organizations were amazed at how it sanitized their devices without interrupting hospital operations.
Seal Shield complemented this solution by offering CleanSlate, following its acquisition of CleanSlate UV. CleanSlate systems were designed for fast sanitization at handwashing stations, NICUs, and other high-traffic areas. The result was not only improved hygiene but improved routines. CleanSlate helped healthcare facilities extend infection prevention practices beyond staff areas, offering an accessible way for visitors to sanitize personal electronics in high-traffic areas. CleanSlate has been vital to supporting infection prevention; it’s normalized device sanitization by integrating it naturally into daily routines, making hygiene efforts feel achievable rather than burdensome.
Expanding UV Innovation: The Vioguard Acquisition
Following the success of CleanSlate UV, Seal Shield continued to expand its capabilities in automated device sanitization through the strategic acquisition of Vioguard. This addition brought a patented portfolio of UV-C technologies designed to deliver consistent, measurable sanitization across a wide range of healthcare devices. Vioguard’s solutions, built on dosimeter-controlled UV-C delivery, align closely with Seal Shield’s mission to remove variability from infection prevention workflows. By integrating these technologies, Seal Shield is now positioned to offer organizations even more scalable, automated healthcare solutions that support both compliance and operational efficiency.

Protecting Data as Well as Devices
As healthcare became increasingly digital, the risks surrounding patient privacy grew alongside infection control concerns. Shared screens, mobile carts, and workstations created new vulnerabilities for pathogens as well as electronic health records.
Clean Seal screen protectors, starting with its standard version, have protected devices from both chemical exposure and liquid disinfectant damage, reducing replacement cycles. Its anti-glare version addressed the harsh lighting issue that made it challenging for staff to work in bright settings.
Seal Shield expanded the standard, cleanable screen protector line with Clean Seal™ Privacy Screen Protectors. Unlike traditional privacy films, they could withstand routine cleaning without peeling, clouding, or degrading. Designed to be permanent, disinfectant-compatible, and custom-fit, Clean Seal addressed issues that traditional screen protectors couldn’t solve.
The result was a solution that addressed compliance gaps without forcing teams to compromise on visibility, cleanability, or workflow efficiency.

The Washable Keyboard Reimagined
Over the years, Seal Shield supported the healthcare ecosystem with a variety of waterproof peripherals. As healthcare environments become increasingly digital, the need for smarter, more responsive tools has grown. The introduction of the Cleanwipe Pro with Copilot AI key reflects this shift. Designed to support modern clinical workflows, this solution integrates advanced keyboard functionality with emerging AI-driven capabilities. It enables clinicians to streamline documentation, reduce administrative burden, and interact more efficiently with digital systems.
When teams needed healthcare solutions that offered the tactile typing feedback of a mechanical keyboard, the Seal Silk Pro was born. The intention was clear: deliver a keyboard that met modern performance expectations without sacrificing cleanability. Seal Silk Pro combined fully sealed, IP68-rated construction with mechanical key technology—bringing tactile precision into environments where it had previously been impossible.
Designed for environments where reliability and responsiveness matter, the Seal Silk Pro combines tactile precision with the cleanability Seal Shield is known for. It demonstrated that industrial grade healthcare technology doesn’t have to feel utilitarian. It can be refined, responsive, and purpose-built for healthcare practitioners.

The Next Chapter of Healthcare Solutions Begins
Now, we’re kicking off the next chapter by bringing Seal Shield Surface™ to AORN 2026. This industry-disruptive technology was developed to solve surface disinfection challenges practitioners face after rigorous cleaning with medical-grade disinfectants, such as streaking and beading. Seal Shield’s innovative solution provides 10x greater chemical coverage and enhanced dwell time to combat variability in manual cleaning practices. This revolutionary surface technology will be deployed across Seal Shield’s newest peripheral products to enhance cleanability and durability.
Reflecting on two decades of innovation, Seal Shield’s leadership continues to emphasize the importance of designing healthcare solutions with purpose.
“As we celebrate 20 years of Seal Shield, we’re incredibly proud of the impact our solutions have had across healthcare environments worldwide,” said Brad Whitchurch, Chief Executive Officer of Seal Shield. “Our focus has always been on solving real challenges for healthcare professionals. This milestone is not only about where we’ve been but continuing to lead with innovation for the next 20 years.”
Seal Shield’s 20-year and counting story is one of listening, learning, and designing for the reality and challenges practitioners face. From washable keyboards to UV-C sanitization, each of our healthcare solutions is created to help reduce pathogen transmission and achieve the highest hygienic standards, creating safer environments for patients and staff.
Twenty years in, Seal Shield isn’t slowing down. We continue to revolutionize healthcare hygiene.
